Chengdu is not a small city, having over 11 million residents that make it rather busy and crowded, with a lot of traffic and pollution that can make this a less than relaxing place to visit. That said, it is also known for having a range of outdoor green spaces like parks that make it more manageable, as well as the famous Panda Breeding Center.
Chengdu Panda Breeding Center
Most people come to Chengdu for the Panda Breeding Center, whose mission is to prevent pandas from becoming extinct. The center helps to breed these amazing animals before releasing them into the wild, so this is not a zoo or a captive attraction, and the work of the center is well regarded the world over. As you walk through the breeding center you will see baby pandas, as well as a range of different species like giant pandas and red pandas, and there are even volunteer programs where you get to feed and bathe these magnificent creatures.
Chengdu is most famous for its Panda Breeding Center and the rest of the city is made up mostly of department stores and concrete housing blocks that are not particularly attractive or interesting. There are however some pretty parks like the People’s Park here if you want to go for a walk around although the constant traffic and pollution can make it difficult to want to stay here for more than a few days, and after you have visited the pandas you may want to move on to somewhere more picturesque.
