A lot of travelers say that Chinese cities are becoming spoilt by constant modernization which is taking away from the more traditional attractions but this is not the case when it comes to Pingyao which is one of the most delightful ancient cities in all of China. On a trip here you can expect charming temples, little tea shops, and old style Chinese houses.
The city walls of Pingyao are one of its best attractions and make a good place to start as you explore this cute city. From the top of the walls you can look out over the city and enjoy the gorgeous views around the valley in which Pingyao sits. If you want to get out and about, then you can explore the valley and surrounding areas of the city by renting a bike and cycling around at your leisure. Back in town, there are some other worthwhile attractions that will fill you in on Pingyao’s history as a financial hub during the Qing Dynasty. The Rishengchang Museum is particularly informative and well designed and the building used to be one of the largest banks in all of China.
Pingyao may be small but there is a reason it has become such a hit on the traveler trail around China in recent years. Full of traditional style buildings that date from the 18th and 19th centuries, all contained within the city walls, this is definitely the place to come if you are looking for a taste of China in the days of old. If you are travelling from Beijing to Xi’an then this is also a great place to break your trip and spend a few days exploring.
