Entry to India
Most nationals will need to apply for their visa before they travel, either from a visa application center or a consulate or embassy.
You can apply for either a single or multiple entry visa which will cost the same price, and is valid for six months from the date of issue. You should note that this does not mean that the visa starts from the date that you enter the country but rather from the date that you pick it up from the visa application center. It pays to make sure that you apply for a visa well in advance of when you want to travel as it can take up to a week for it to be processed.

You will not be allowed to extend your tourist visa in India unless in extreme circumstances such as hospitalization or serious illness.
If you wish to stay longer then you will need to leave and apply for a new tourist visa in order to return. For this reason many travelers go to neighboring Nepal for visa runs.
That said, the official rules state that you must not spend more than six months in India within one year on a tourist visa so there is no guarantee that you will get another one immediately.
