The food in Indonesia is often underappreciated and not particularly well known abroad, but is absolutely delicious and extremely varied.
One of the standard dishes in Indonesia is Fried Rice. Quite simply rice is fried in a wok with a paste made from chilies and shrimp and different things added like shrimp, shredded chicken, or seafood like octopus and squid. Usually it is served topped with a fried egg with cucumber and tomato on the side. Mie Goreng is basically the same thing but made with fried noodles instead of rice.
Gado-Gado is a crunchy and delicious salad that pairs raw ingredients like cabbage and lettuce with steamed components like carrots and potato. Other things like bean sprouts and beans are added and the whole lot is topped with a peanut sauce dressing.
Nasi Padang restaurants are found all over Indonesia and can be spotted due to their glass fronts and towers of plates stacked in the window. Here you will find rice that you can customize however you want by choosing from the many other dishes available, and these include things like curries, fried chicken or fish, or vegetables dishes like eggplants in chili paste and boiled papaya leaves.
Bakso vendors are found all over Indonesia and this is also a dish served in restaurants. Basically a meatball soup, bakso has a basic broth to which the meatballs and other things are added such as noodles and celery leaves. You can then customize the taste by adding chili sauce, tomato sauce, and sweet soy sauce.
