Osaka is one of the biggest cities in Japan and while neighboring Kyoto is famous for its beauty, Osaka is less picturesque and more of a typical Japanese city. That said, there are a number of nice attractions to see here and people in Osaka are known for being some of the friendliest and most welcoming in all of Japan. As well as the people, Osaka is said to have some of the best food in the country.
Umeda Sky Building
A good place to start your trip in Osaka is at the Umeda Sky Building, which is one of the tallest buildings in the city and offers stunning views so that you can get an idea of the plan of the city below you. As space in Japan is often at a premium, the Umeda Sky Building features an observatory on the roof called the Floating Garden Observatory if you want to see something a little different. Make sure not to miss the gardens and fountains at the base of the building as well which are perfect for an afternoon walk.
The Osaka Castle is actually not the original that would have stood here in the days of old, as this was destroyed during the Second World War. The castle was restored after the war and is known for its beauty and splendor and also served as a fortress so come here if you want to see examples of Japanese armory. It is also surrounded by a moat and has 13 different buildings on the complex, all of which tell the story of ancient Japan.
Osaka residents and Japanese nationals in general have a reputation for working hard, but in the evening Osaka really comes alive and no more so than the Dotombori District. Here you will find good food and a party atmosphere and things not to miss are the sushi bars and the okonomiyaki shops, a kind of Japanese pancake. There are also a number of rooftop bars where you can watch the sunset with a drink.
Osaka is not the prettiest city in all of Japan but is has a great atmosphere that makes is worth a visit, and as it is known for being the ‘nation’s kitchen’ you mustn’t miss the chance to try some of the local food and party scene in places like the Dotombori district.
