The tourist visa for Laos is available on arrival at some entry points but not all, so it’s important to check if you can get a visa at your chosen entry point before you arrive.
Entry to Laos
You can also get a visa for Laos ahead of time at a Lao embassy or consulate which costs around US $30, although some nationals from ASEAN countries can get a Lao visa for free. As it is not always easy arranging visas, you mind find it useful to check out our general visa page.
The tourist visa on arrival is available at border crossings between Laos and Thailand, and is also available if you choose to fly into either Luang Prabang or Vientiane international airports. It is also available at the international crossings from Vietnam as well as some of the crossings in the south from Cambodia, although it is best to check the latest travel news in-country first as the rules are prone to change without warning.
The Lao tourist visa can be extended but it can get pricey as it will cost you $3 a day which is $30 for 10 days, more than the cost of the original visa on arrival. As such, many tourists who want to extend usually just go out to somewhere like Thailand and enter again on another 30 day tourist visa.
Should you overstay on your visa, you will be fined $10 per day, payable when you exit.
