For years Sri Lanka has been rocked by war as well as the tsunami that hit in 2004 and devastated much of the region.
Now however Sri Lanka has risen again and although this country sees a fair amount of tourism, you can still find areas off the tourist track, especially along the south coast.
Many of the beach areas along the coast offer excellent value, or you can travel to the cooling hill stations in the center of the country. Wherever you choose to go however, this is a fantastic country that offers a relaxed and engaging visit.

Travel south where you will find the old Dutch city, Galle. Here you will find a slightly less developed and slower pace of life in this colonial town and can move on to quieter areas along the coast like picturesque Mirissa.
From the coast, you can travel inland to the hill areas of Sri Lanka which include Kandy, the second city of Sri Lanka, which is also considered its cultural heartland.
Along the side of the hill country you will also find charming towns like Ella which are known for their stunning views and walking trails.
