Arugam Bay lies on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka and is best known for being the premier surf location in the country. You can also surf in other parts of the country like Mirissa, however the waves in Arugam Bay are undoubtedly better and bigger, so if you like surfing then this is a great stop off.
If you are coming to Arugam Bay specifically for the surfing then the best time to come is from April to September when the waves are at their peak. Whether you never stood on a surfboard before or are a more experienced surfer, you will find spots that are perfect for you. You can easily rent a surfboard from many of the tents along the beach. In October and November the waves are decent but Arugam Bay can be quieter and feel a little deserted. After November many of the beach tents and operators close for the winter season so this is not the best time to come.
Kumana National Park
To the south of Arugam Bay you will find Kumana National Park, which used to be known as Yala East. Here you will find a huge range of animals in their natural habitat such as elephants, leopards, snakes, and gorgeous birds. Many visitors come here for a safari experience which you can arrange at Arugam Bay and which includes a guide who will explain all about the flora and fauna of Sri Lanka.
To the south of Arugam Bay you will find Crocodile Rock, which is actually a strip of deserted beach. Many surfers like to come here as it is quieter and there is a good chance that you will get to see some crocodiles here, which gave the beach its name.
It’s fair to say that there is not a huge amount in Arugam Bay itself, as this is more of a village than a town with just a single main road running through it. However, you will find guesthouses, cafes, and little beach huts that have everything you need to make a few days here memorable, and if you love surfing then this is the best place to come in Sri Lanka.
