Dondra is one of the lesser known destinations of Sri Lanka and is often only known for Dondra Head. Dondra Head or Dondra Head Lighthouse is the sight to see as it is the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka and one of the tallest in entire South East Asia. It was build during the times of the British and was an important location when it came to beneficial sea routes. Right now the Dondra Lighthouse is closed to the public and it feels like a bit of lost glory. However, that doesn’t make the lighthouse less beautiful as you can see on the pictures below.
Apart from Dondra Head, there is one more thing in the area that shouldn’t be missed; Talalla beach. Can you imagine an empty and beautiful wide beach? That’s exactly what Talalla beach is. There are very few people and by many this beach is seen as one of the best beaches of Sri Lanka.
Dondra is an interesting area mainly for the Dondra Lighthouse. There’s also a big buddha temple with two elephants that we didn’t include here as we haven’t heard many good reviews on it. Luckily the lighthouse isn’t the only thing to see as you’ve got Talalla beach where you’ll be able to enjoy some relaxation time. All in all it is not an absolute must in Sri Lanka but definitely an interesting place to check out for a day if you’re in the area.
