One of the largest cities in Sri Lanka, Kandy is busy and the crowds can be a little much for some visitors, especially if you have been to some of the less central parts of the country first. Still, Kandy is known for having a pleasant atmosphere and you will find some good bars and restaurants here, as well as it being the start or end point of a trip from Kandy to Ella by train.
Temple of the Tooth
The Temple of the Tooth or Sri Dalada Maligawa is one of the most important Buddhist sites in the whole of the country because it is the home of the tooth said to have belonged to Buddha. You can’t actually see the tooth, which is kept in a golden casket, and you can only get access to the room with the tooth during puja, which is prayer time or a time to bring offerings. The temple sits in a larger complex and there are other temples and museums inside which are also nice to visit while you are there.
Kandy View Point
Kandy View Point sits near to Kandy Lake and to get there you will need to climb up from Rajapihilla Mawatha. Still, it is worth it thanks to the panoramic views of the city which include the nearby lake, and this considered one of the best places to come during a trip to Kandy. At the view point you will find shops and restaurants although be warned that there are also a lot of street sellers here who can makes things a bit stressful, so just be clear that you don’t want t buy anything from them if you want to be left alone.
Train to Ella
Many travelers choose to leave Kandy by train and move on to Ella, and with good reason. This is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful train rides in the world so we highly advise you not to skip this amazing experience!
Kandy is a nice city to travel to in Sri Lanka, nestled in the middle of green hills in the heart of the country.
