A village on the south coast of Sri Lanka, there is not a huge amount to do in Mirissa other than enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and explore the surrounding scenery. That said, there is a reason that many travelers come here and end up staying far longer than they meant to. Despite the fact that Mirissa was not a prime tourist location in Sri Lanka, it is getting popular and you will still find more and more restaurants and guesthouses near to the beach. So although it doesn’t truly stand out, many travelers find that this is one of the nicest destinations in Sri Lanka.
Mirissa has a quiet beach with clean waters and some good waves so this can be a great place to surf. Both beginners and experienced surfers can find something to enjoy here and there are surf lessons offered if you want to learn. If you want bigger waves then it’s best to go to neighboring Weligama instead.
There are not many ‘activities’ to enjoy in Mirissa, but whale watching is one of them. This is the best place in Sri Lanka to see whales in the wild and while it is certainly an impressive sight, there are some ethical issues to consider before you go. The boats that take visitors out can sometimes get too close to the whales, disturbing them and their natural environment, although some companies keep their distance and have more respect for these mammals. Ask around in Mirissa and if you do decide to go out pick a company that you have heard good feedback about.
Diving is another common thing to do here and there are a number of companies that will take you out to explore the sea off the coast of Mirissa. There is some pretty coral here and a wealth of aquatic life, so if you like diving this is a good choice. Most of the operators here charge about the same price for diving, so the best thing to do is ask questions about their operation and equipment to see if you feel comfortable going out with them.
Mirissa is widely considered to be one of the nicest destinations in all of Sri Lanka, so definitely try to make time for a trip here if you can. The atmosphere here is incredibly laid back and relaxed, and it can be the kind of place where you plan to come for a week and end up staying a month. Certainly if you like watersports like diving or snorkeling then there is plenty to enjoy here, as well as surfing or whale watching.
