Nuwara Eliya is the tea capital of Sri Lanka and famous for the many tea factories and vegetable fields. Although it is not one of the most visited destinations, it is easily reached, as it is a stop on the world’s most beautiful train ride from Ella to Kandy.
If you’re just a little bit interested in tea, you’ll want to go and see a tea factory. One of the most famous tea factories in Nuwara Eliya is Macwoods. Here you can find out everything you can possible know about tea. The entire process of how tea actually gets created is quiet interesting and after that, drinking a cup of tea will never be the same again.
Get into the tea fiels
If you’re a bit adventurous like us, you’ll want to go into the tea fields yourself. First of all to put the theory to practice, but it’s also a great excuse to get and take some beautiful pictures for Instagram.
By going inside of the tea fields, you’ll be able to get a real feeling for the work that is being done. You’ll see plenty of (often) women working in the high hills, which they often do for twelve hours a day. After having seen all that hard work, you might be able to appreciate that cup of tea back home even more.
Another activity in Nuwara Eliya is hiking to a waterfall as there are plenty of those. You’ll find them pretty much everywhere and they come in all shapes and sizes. Some of them are more into the direction of Ella and others, such as the Ramboda waterfall, as easily reached from Nuwara Eliya itself.
Nuwara Eliya is not a very touristy destination yet and therefore offers something quiet special. Being in in an environment full of green tea- and vegetable fields is a great experience that you’ll probably not soon have again, so you better enjoy it!
